What is time? Emily didn't know

Time has a huge significance, in the fact that it isn't significant, in the story "Rose For Emily". In regards to the setting of the story time explains why the language is different from our modern language and why certain words that are said wouldn't be considered appropriate today. It fits into the narration because it is a towns person that is telling the story after Emily's funeral and the narration is from the perspective of an outside person looking in at Emily's life. It really makes sense at the end of the story why time is not in a chronological order because we find out at the end what really happened just as the towns people found out; it also makes the story more interesting. When I was reading the story it seemed like time didn't have a specific meaning because the story kept jumping around and going out of order and it really ties in with Emily's personality because Emily had no respect for time, she made the world work to her liking. For example, Emily refused to modernize by getting something as simple as a mailbox because she loved the time or era she grew up in, where her family were the richest family and everyone looked up to them and the servants went to the post office to get the mail. It seemed like she was trying to hold on the life that she knew and liked, the life that she was most comfortable with and any kind of new reform she would simply not pay attention to it. Even the death of Homer Barron by the hands of Emily shows that Emily wanted him for as long as she was alive and wasn't going to take any risks that anything could go wrong so she killed him and kept his body with her to bend life and time to her will.

  1. I do agree that at the end it becomes clear that the reason for the story being told out of chronological order is to emphasize the fact that Emily was sleeping with her dead "husband". But I am a little confused on what you meant by the language was different. Does it mean that people spoke differently throughout the story? If so, I did not pick it up. Also, the point of view could explain the jumbling of the timeline, because it is a person looking at her life on the outside.

  3. What i think was meant by "different Language" for example is 'Negro' that wouldnt be acceptable to use in our society today. African American would have been a better alternative!

  4. The fact that time gave an insight of the people and their traditions helped the story a lot. Also, the fact that time wasn't consecutively, but disorganized shows that the purpose was to build suspense as well as an attention grabber to keep the reader, and not bore them. The third person narration was odd, but it could explain why the timing was so mixed.

  5. Only two things stood out as things that needed improvement. The first is pronouns, you do not use he and she enough. There were several sentences that had Emily in it twice. If you fix that it will make the sentence structure much stronger. The second is the visual aspect of the journal. Although I do think that the background is cool and the baby blue is a nice color, I do not think that they are properly used for this assignment. Try a darker text; it will be easier to read.

  6. It's true time plays an important role in this story. She kills the man who is in love with her so can be with him forever and then never has to worry if he ever leaves her. Emily does the same thing with her father and holds on to his body for 3 days. She lives in the past and tries to turn back time that was stolen from her. Do you think it was okay from Emily to think like that just to hold on to someone forever because of what she had to go through because of her father?
